Wilko shouldn't need any introduction - having found it impossible to get a place in the new-look Middlesbrough side, he came to us on loan as we tried to find a solution to our striker problem. It took him approximately thirteen seconds to be caught offside and have a moan at the linesman in his first game (a fine 2-1 win at Millwall) - it's nice to know that some things never change. He didn't score but he did what we asked of him, providing flick-ons and support for Kevin Phillips - generally we looked a better side for his presence, particularly against Tranmere when he put himself about quite superbly. There was one glaring miss - a free header at Birmingham - but otherwise he did well. It was no coincidence that his loan spell saw a brief revival in our fortunes. Once he'd returned, Roeder attempted to bring him back for good but, having negotiated hard for a decent deal, Petchey vetoed the transfer because of money.
