BLIND, STUPID AND DESPERATE

Gone but not forgotten:
Gerard Lavin

Position: Right back
From: Youth team
Record: Played: 141(6) Scored: 3
To: Millwall - stlg 500,000 - November 1995
Career stats: Soccerbase
He was: Not as good as Nigel Gibbs

Gerard Lavin was that most frustrating of players - the promising youngster who turns out to be merely ordinary. For a while, he was excellent (two of the three goals he scored were marvellous - nobody'll forget that screamer at Peterborough) then he seemed to lose it completely. So memories of Lavin will, unfortunately, be of a full back unwilling to put in any tackles and of crosses ending up in the back of the stand. We sold him on to Millwall (the fee looks bigger than it is - to get the full half a million, he has to score the winner in the World Cup Final for Scotland, become Prime Minister of Brazil and appear in an episode of Coronation Street) who were top of the table at the time and ended up getting relegated - 'nuff said. We haven't missed him - if we ever want anyone to curl a cross into the Rookery, we've got Darren Bazeley.
