The little team played great
Report by Chris Salter

Fresh from three days at the beach (how's that for bragging?), I note a number of "Famous Defeats" at the hands of Liverpool being featured in the WML.

Nobody has yet mentioned the FA Cup 3rd Round replay from 1966-67. I guess this would have been early in the Furphy era with us in Division III, and we'd just drawn 0-0 with the mighty 'Pool at the Vic.

I was studying advanced drinking at Manchester at the time, so I coaxed the remains of my side-valve Ford van into life and staggered over to Anfield. Doubtless due to the effects of the night before's hangover, I finished up on the Kop with twenty thousand plus rabid scousers.

The game was a classic cup tie, with the lads playing their hearts out for a 3-1 defeat. They were applauded off the pitch by the whole crowd at the end.

I remember my 6'6" Liverpudlian crowd neighbour looking down at the 5'3" of me, patting me on the back, and saying, "Your little team played great", then adding, "Personally, though, you're dead lucky that they lost!" Well, we got our revenge in the 6th round in 1969-70, but that (as they say) is another story!
