Saint of the Day: Saint Marķa Michaela Desmaisičres, a Spanish vicountess, despised her life of privilege. Forced to attend balls, banquets and the theatre, she would atone for this decadence by concealing "instruments of penance" beneath her dress: anything from extremely uncomfortable clothing to painful bracelets. She was far happier devoting her time to the sick and poor, founding her own order to care for prostitutes and eventually dying of cholera contracted when trying to help other victims.

Further information
