Saint of the day: Saint Rose of Lima, the patron saint of South America, raised eyebrows by wandering around with a heavy cross, sleeping on bricks and wearing gloves filled with nettles. She was generally assumed to be crazy until she announced her prayers had saved Lima from an earthquake. As there had indeed been no earthquake she was held in the highest regard.
