On this day

Previous reports: Torquay United 1 Watford 1 06/12/97
Celebrity birthdays: Ira Gershwin (1896), Rick Buckler (1955)
Historical events: In Italy, Benito Mussolini introduced a tax on bachelors (1926), Mike Newell set a record by scoring the quickest Champions' League hat-trick in history - in nine minutes for Blackburn against Rosenborg. This record still stands, which kind of befits the competition, really (1995)
Saint of the day: Best known by his Dutch title, Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas was a favourite with children even before he was hijacked by commercialism. Something of an amateur sleuth, Nicholas was concerned when his local butcher was able to provide fresh meat during a famine. In the cellar he discovered three barrels containing boys in brine and brought them back to life immediately.
